17 children died and 13 others were severely burnt in a sudden fire at a boarding school in Hill Side Endshaw Primary School in Nyeri County, Kenya. A police officer told reporters on Friday that the death toll is expected to increase. Giving this information, police spokesperson Rasila Onyango further said that 4 children up to 14 years of age live in the boarding school.
Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu and Education Minister said the building where the students live is a three-story building. It houses 150 students. Most of the houses are made of planks and the fire spreads quickly.
This school has 824 students. It is 200 km away from the capital Nairobi. It is located in the central highlands in the north. Central and South Africa are heavily forested, so most houses are made of wood. Therefore fires are natural.
After this fire, the parents of the dead children were very worried and were searching for the bodies of their children.
Following the tragedy, President William Hato described the news as “disturbing”. In the above tweet, Hato said that those responsible would be severely punished. Vice President Rigathi Nguyagua urged school administrators to properly follow the guidelines given for safety.
Many parents, especially those who live far from the school, send their children to boarding schools to save commuting time.
Some time ago, students set the school building on fire in protest against work pressure and living conditions. Often, drug lords set fire to the school when they are drunk.
