A fire broke out in a residential building in eastern China's Nanjing city, killing 15 people and injuring 44 others. On Saturday, a Chinese official told in a press conference that a fire broke out in a high-rise building on Friday morning. Preliminary investigation revealed that an electric bike had fallen in front of the building.
The building is located in the Yuhuatai District of Nanjing, a city with a population of more than 8 million and 260 kilometers northwest of Shanghai. Officials said the fire was brought under control by 6 am and the relief and rescue operations were completed by 2 pm on Friday.
In a video going viral on Chinese social media, a skyscraper can be seen on fire and black smoke billowing out at midnight. Other footage showed several floors of the building engulfed in flames. Meanwhile, flashing lights of emergency vehicles parked at the spot can also be seen. White smoke can be seen coming out from many parts of the building.
Mayor expressed regret
Officials said 44 people were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. It has been learned that one of them is unwell and the condition of the other is critical. Speaking at a press conference, city mayor Chen Zichang expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and expressed regret over the incident.
According to media reports, fires and other fatal accidents have become common in China due to poor safety standards and management. There have been many such incidents of fire in China in the last few months. Negligence of officials has often come to the fore in these incidents. President Xi Jinping last month expressed concern over the spate of fires and called for a large-scale end to such incidents.
Fire creates 'panic' in China!
In January, a store fire in the central city of Shinju killed dozens of people. State media reported that the fire was caused by “illegal” use of fire by workers in the basement of the shop. Additionally, a fire broke out late in the evening at a school in central China's Henan province, killing 13 schoolchildren sleeping in a dormitory. Local media reports suggest the fire was caused by an electric heating device.
